More Pencil Tests

I should probably be spending my time on 3D stuff, but this is usually more fun.

The timing is obviously way too fast but it was still fun to through in some inbetweens just to see how it could move.

I did a half cycle Blair shuffle because, I don't know, why not?

A Pencil Test

Finally! My 9th Symphony! ...er. No.

I just wanted to see if I could rig up my webcam to serve as a downshooter. This is more of an angle shooter but it's good enough for now. I laid out a backup disk I've got but don't use on my desk and I threw together about an hours worth of drawings straight ahead just to see how it would work. This was immediately gratifying!

Scribbly Tits

Scribbles. Basically ripped the idea off a wallpaper for Red Dead Redemption.

Next scene planning

So today I started planning for the next scene I'd like to start on. (While I'm still addressing issues from older scenes of course.) Here is my process.

At first I made a simple foreground, with the intention being that the character will hop across horizontally from left to right. This is going to be an exercise in mechanics so I want it to be almost like an obstacle course. Then I scribbled in a rough idea of how I'd like my spacing to be and in what direction I want the character to move. I doubt this image is useful to anyone but myself, but it's a way for me to visualize what my brain is thinking in terms of motion at the most basic level.

From there, I went ahead and started putting down ideas for how I'd like the character to move from place to place. Obviously there is no construction, maintenance of volume, on-model fidelity, uuhh... draftsmanship of any kind really, and for multiple reasons, one of which is that I figure it's not worth the time at this kind of stage.

It's hard to show that this dude should be bent forward given this angle and if I had drawn it dimensionally it would be more clear.

So by the end of it, like I said about the first drawing, this whole thing is mostly only useful to me. I just want to get the idea in my head to a visual place where I can start posing a character in 3d. And it's easier for me to do that if I feel like I have a plan. I might skip the last gag if I feel like I'm not pulling it off successfully, and I'm sure I'll have to move poses around as I realize they don't really flow through space well. But this is my jumping point.

Some edits

I made some alterations to the planning here after having talked to a few people about it. I made my changes in red.

I'm cutting this idea because it's not clear. My idea was to have this character look around excitedly at other people in the room to visualize his anticipation to other characters before diving into his gift, but I think it's simpler to have him focus on what's in front of him. Especially since I don't establish that there might be multiple characters in the scene.

I'm overwriting these frames so that the character has a change in his line of action after he realizes that the gift wasn't what he wanted. I think it serves to contrast his changing thoughts.

Looking at it now, I might even have him revert back to his straight back pose immediately after his initial recoiling to flow better into the next pose. Just typing out loud.

On to the next phase.

Birthday Surprise

Here is a new idea I worked on today that I think is better and simpler than my last post.
